Part 1 The Trauma Informed Immigration Attorney
Immigration attorneys frequently work with clients who have experienced trauma.  Working with these individuals can also cause vicarious trauma for the lawyer.  In this presentation, presenters will discuss what practitioners need to understand about trauma in clients and themselves and the special stigma that accompanies trauma.  Topics include:

  • Understanding trauma and the potential for disability
  • Recognizing and addressing trauma in clients
  • Recognizing and addressing secondary and vicarious trauma in ourselves
  • How stigma prevents us from offering and receiving help
  • Ethical considerations
  • Resources for lawyers and their clients.

Part 2. Seasoned practitioners share their insights on How to Develop Your Immigration Practice, Roll with the Punches,  Avoid Burnout and Build Resilience in Today’s Environment
The second hour or so would include the practitioners.  Some questions we have identified are:

  • Briefly describe your career path
  • Starting out: what I know now that I wish I knew then, where did I feel the impact of traumatic cases and traumatized clients, what I learned as a new lawyer that helped me
  • Transitions – touchstones of stress and resilience – what hurts and what works
  • The elephant in the room – the overwhelming effect of changes to immigration practice – more need, more trauma. How do we keep doing the work we love in the face of these challenges.

In the course of this, there are a number of tools or exercises that might be offered as handouts, group exercises, etc.

1 Bias Credit will be requested.

**NOTE** This CLE is free to participants registered for the Upper Midwest Immigration Law Conference the following day on March 9th. Cost to attend this CLE only is $30.
